'The Golden Hour'House altar - 2022Mixed media (click for details)9" x 28" x 43"
In Renaissance Europe, elaborate house altars, often built from carved ebony, and intricately ornamented with silver and gold, were created in workshops supported by the wealth of royal families like the Habsburg dynasty.  These exquisite shrines, miniature versions of full-scale altarpieces and retables found in cathedrals and churches, took a honored position in a private home, serving as a centerpiece of personal contemplation and worship.  An owner of a house altar could begin and end each day with a visible reminder of what they most revered or treasured in life.
Each of us likely has a special natural place in our hearts that is probably already seeing unwelcome changes  due to humankind's impact on our climate.  The Golden Hour is dedicated to just such a place.
The ebony and pernambuco used to accent The Golden Hour were gifted to me by my friend Charles, a master instrument maker.
